Taylor’d Driving on YouTube
As we drive some of the more difficult roundabouts and junctions, video’s of these are available to reinforce learning. The video below is exiting the Chester Test Centre.
Presenter
Your Instructor will guide you through the Taylor’d Driving approach, using a comprehensive Presenter containing diagrams, pictures and illustrations to help your understanding.
A system of learning to suit beginners, part trained or full licence holders requiring refresher lessons. Consisting of 32 Target areas, meeting DVSA competencies for the driving test.
Beginners start with control skills:-
1. Cockpit checks and safety checks. 2. Moving away, stopping and blindspot. 3. Clutch control / slow control / braking. 4. Gears. 5. Steering and safe positioning
Moving onto strategies and rules for driving safely at junctions, crossroads, traffic light systems and city centre driving. Once a safe level of competency has been mastered with control, lessons are focused on more demanding driving on roundabouts, country roads and dual carriageways.
Part trained or full licence holders lessons, focus on specific target areas. Depending on personal needs.
Tasks are accomplished at a speed to suits individuals. Making brisk progress as long as it’s safe to do so.
Target areas are sequenced recognising more demanding areas, but beginners will drive on a road for their first lesson and not in a car park. The aim is to be driving in traffic, through a city centre after 10 hours.
Learner Progress
Learner progress is recorded in a Learner Targets booklet and the instructor record sheet, a more detailed record of when targets are introduced, prompted and performed independently.
The aim is for all targets areas to be performed independently, as will be the case on the driving test. The instructors record sheet is a comprehensive indicator of progress and of test readiness.
Driving lessons are recorded on the lessons taken form, including information on your previous experience. The Taylor’d Driving system recognises strengths of learners, which can be built upon.
Control and instruction by your driving instructor, will gradually be reduced with improvements, encouraging independence.
Lessons Plans
Lesson plans are discussed and agreed. The lesson plan is recorded on the lesson planner form, with at least two targets. Progress towards these is discussed and assessed by your instructor.
Roundabouts
To help you negotiate roundabouts safely, your instructor can refer to a comprehensive roundabout guide.
This guide includes images for the main roundabouts in Chester and on test routes from the Chester test centre.
It includes the Queensferry, Cheshire Oaks, Fountains, Parkgate and Dunkirk roundabouts. The main roundabouts from the Chester test centre.
Manoeuvres
Your instructor can also use a manoeuvres guide to help you understand the requirements for the driving test.
This guide includes diagrams and photographs for the pull up on the right, reverse into a bay, drive into a bay and the parallel park. The manoeuvres for the driving test.
It also includes information on a drivers responsibility towards other road users, security and eco driving. Encouraging a life time of safe driving.
Other Routes
Some parts of test routes can be difficult to negotiate without some preparation. To help your understanding, the other routes guide includes Google Earth Images of some of the more difficult junctions and roads.
This will help you prepare for situations when a bit of quick thinking is required, for example, when making a safe lane change to follow a required test route.
The Instructors Sketch book and Road Signs
Your instructor may ask you to sketch the direction you would drive after being given verbal directions, similar to those of examiners as part of the independent drive.
A useful aid for discussing and anticipating potential strategies to drive safely on the driving test.
Road sign pictures can be viewed prior to driving a route, to help learners negotiate routes.
The first independent drive can be a challenge. Learning aids such as this help learners to build their confidence.
